Classic Film Review: "Marnie" (1964) If your list of favorite Alfred Hitchcock films does not include Marnie , you need to rethink your list. The 1964 film, adapted from the novel by Winston Graham, finds the Master of Suspense and his collaborators at the top of their game. Bernard Herrman's score is equal parts grand and hypnotic. Edith Head's costumes inform as much of Marnie's character as the script does. The production design is among the best in any Hitchcock film. Film Review: A Ghost Story                                     Between   Personal Shopper  and David Lowery's A Ghost Story , 2017 has been a good year for thought-provoking ghost movies. Lowery's film is the stranger of the two, but still one of the most memorable movies in quite some time. It's an entrancing contemplation of love and loss, an exploration through time of what it means to be connected to a place, to a person.  Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck play an unnamed couple. We don't learn much about them, but we learn that they are in love. A heavy sense of dread pervades these early scenes of the film. Affleck's character dies and his ghost returns to his house to observe first Mara, then other occupants of the house and the land on which it sits.   My new YouTube series examines the musical legacy of John Kander and Fred Ebb. Watch the video here, or, if you’d prefer, you can read my script for it below.  Over the next few months, I will be listening to the original Broadway cast album for the 15 musicals Kander & Ebb wrote together that have such a recording, one at a time, in chronological order, and ranking them.  So, why Kander & Ebb? There are other composers who I rate more highly, and about half of these shows I have never listened to at all, but that’s what makes this an exciting journey of discovery.  I’m coming to them fresh.
